The Carmel Matriculation School of Tamil Nadu, India, provides an academically accredited and Christian-based education to hundreds of South India’s poorest children. Most are from “Untouchable” families who are barely scraping by and would not otherwise be able to afford an education for their children. Children who are orphans or whose parent(s) are unable to provide a stable home nearby are boarded at the school.

 

As of this writing, nearly 900 children are receiving life-saving nutritional, educational, and spiritual support at Carmel. The Family Knit Program sponsors almost 250 of these students. The impact of the Family Knit Program upon the lives of these impoverished children in this remote and desperate region cannot be overstated. The congregations of First Presbyterian Church of York, PA, Aldersgate United Methodist Church of York, PA, and Elkins Park Presbyterian Church of Elkins Park, PA primarily support the Family Knit Program.

 

Family Knit Program sponsors contribute a monthly gift of about twenty-five dollars per sponsored child, which goes a long way at the Carmel School. It provides three meals, a uniform, personal care items, and full board (if needed) for a student each school day, and covers Carmel’s meager tuition fees. Sponsors are also encouraged to show their support by sending letters and birthday cards to their children, as the tangible and spiritual benefits that such relationships offer to these destitute children are priceless.
